The Serbian community in Australia, like all fellow Australians, has a great passion for sport, and indeed we participate in all kinds of sports and at all levels. Golf is a sport which has had participation by Serbs for a long time, although it has only been relatively recently that the Serbian Community has organised itself into Social Golf Clubs.
The Geelong Serbian Golf Club established in 1978, The Victorian Serbian Golf Club, and the Golden Eagles Social Golf Club from Sydney established in 1988, and it is with great pleasure we announce that the Serbian Community in Canberra has also formed a social golf club on the 29th of April, 2007, which was named ‘The Serbian Golf Club - Canberra’.
A great day of golf was organised at the Vikings Capital Golf Club by Branko Zec and Djuro Pudja, who are also members of the newly formed committee, and with special guests Serbian professional golfer Zoran Mitic from Melbourne and members of the Golden Eagles Social Golf Club from Sydney including President Bruno Mitrovic, Club Captain Zeljko Maric, along with 7 club members from Sydney as well as the 20 Canberra players that turned out on the day.
The group had a great game followed by a banquet lunch at the St Sava Serbian Club in Mawson which was sponsored by George Djuro Pudja’s company ‘IBIS Integrated Building and Inspection Services’, and attended by all players as well as Father Ilija Dragosavljevic and Father Nikola Bilic who blessed the food and the proceedings. We then awarded the prizes for the days golf and selected the committee to represent the newly formed club.
As the president of the newly formed club I would like to thank the following people specifically for their assistance, advice and attendance on the day – Bruno Mitrovic, George Bubalo, Zeljko Maric, Zoran Mitic, Zdravko Jez, Miroljub Strbac, Jack Milenkovic, Stevan Mitrovic, Svetislav Mitrovic, Peter Wallensky, Dax Foster and Branko Zec. Special thanks to Stevo Pilipovic and Mican Stekovic at the St Sava Club in Mawson who along with Chef Bane helped to prepare the lunch and drinks on the day.
In 2015 a new committee was selected, and along with a redesign of the club logo, the club has gained Golf Link accreditation, and now all games played with the club are officially recognised under Golf Link and Golf NSW.
I sincerely hope the Serbian Community in Australia embraces the sport of Golf as I see it as a great opportunity for exercise, social interaction, establishing business contacts and a great way to promote the entire Serbian Community in Australia.
